Ford and Mazda have notified drivers that some models of their vehicles are still affected by faulty Takata airbags and inflators that can cause potentially severe or fatal injuries.
Before now, the National Highway Safety Administration in a statement, warned that airbag inflators could explode in impacted vehicles. This could lead to deadly sharp metal fragments to strike the driver or passengers.
Ford has encouraged drivers with affected vehicles to contact dealerships for immediate repairs.
The vehicle models affected by the recall are; the Ranger trucks, Mustang and GT sports cars, Fusion sedans, the Edge, and some SUVs.
According to Ford, about 765,600 airbag inflators in its vehicles, including about 374,300 in the U.S., are still affected. With more than 121 million outreach attempts in the United States, Ford says it will continue to contact customers affected.
While for Mazda, there are an estimated 83,000 vehicles in the United States affected. With models such as its CX-7 crossovers and RX8 sports cars leading the way.
Hundreds of injuries and more than thirty deaths have been caused by Takata airbags installed in vehicles by various carmakers since 2009.
In the last 10 years, more than 100 million vehicles with Takata airbag inflators have been recalled worldwide. Takata, who used to be the leading supplier of airbags in the world filed for bankruptcy in 2017.
