Tesla’s Supercharger network has once again claimed first place in J.D. Power’s 2024 Electric Vehicle Experience Public Charging Study, continuing its streak of dominance in the EV charging industry.
Tesla scored an impressive 743 out of 1000 points, while second-place ChargePoint trailed significantly at 627 points. What’s particularly interesting is that even non-Tesla owners rated Superchargers highly at 706 points, proving its appeal to EV owners of other brands.
This score from non-Tesla owners is still forty-two points higher than the competition, highlighting the Supercharger network’s superior performance across the board.
The high ratings come despite Tesla’s score dropping slightly from last year’s 745 points. This minor dip hasn’t affected Tesla’s dominant position in the market, as the gap between Tesla and its competitors remains substantial.
The study attributes the difference in satisfaction between Tesla and non-Tesla owners to challenges in payment and charging processes. Non-Tesla owners currently need to take extra steps and use special adapters to access the Superchargers, impacting their overall experience.
Tesla’s network is now open to other EV brands, a significant shift in the company’s strategy. While this has led to increased traffic at some charging stations, it has caused some grumbling among Tesla owners. This hasn’t significantly dampened overall user satisfaction. Non-Tesla owners, including those with EVs from Ford and Rivian, appreciate access to the extensive network that was previously unavailable to them.
However, it’s not all smooth sailing. J.D. Power reported a slight decline in Tesla owners’ satisfaction with charger availability from the beginning of the year. This could be attributed to the influx of non-Tesla vehicles now using the network.
Despite these challenges, Tesla’s Supercharger network remains the gold standard in EV charging. Brent Gruber, executive director of the EV practice at J.D. Power, emphasized that both Tesla and non-Tesla owners find charging at Tesla Supercharger facilities most satisfying overall.
