BYD has taken Chinese performance car pricing into new territory with the Yangwang U9 Xtreme. The limited-run electric hypercar reportedly sold for more than $2.76 million at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, making it the most expensive Chinese production car ever sold. The deal also became one of the biggest talking points from the event.
Only 30 units will be built globally, which puts the U9 Xtreme closer to a collector’s car than a regular performance model.
What Makes BYD’s Yangwang U9 Xtreme Worth a Record-Breaking Price
The U9 Xtreme had already made headlines before the sale because of what it achieved on track. In September 2025, German GT driver Marc Basseng drove the car to 496.22 km/h (or 308.4 mph), at the Automotive Testing Papenburg high-speed oval in Germany. That run placed it above the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ benchmark and made it one of the most talked-about electric performance cars in the world.
The car also put to the test and proved that it was not built for straight-line speed alone. At the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the U9 Xtreme recorded a 6:59.157 lap time, putting it among the fastest production EVs to run the circuit. The result also showed how well the car could handle braking, grip and control on one of the world’s toughest tracks.
Under the body, the U9 Xtreme uses four independent electric motors with a combined output of about 3,000 horsepower. It runs on BYD’s upgraded 1,200V silicon carbide platform, drawing power from the company’s Blade Battery. The car also features DiSus-X active suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes and a revised aero package built to keep it stable at extreme speed. For BYD, this is more than a price record. The U9 Xtreme shows how far Yangwang wants to go in the ultra-luxury EV space, where Chinese automakers are no longer only competing on affordability.
