It seems to be ‘Supercar crash season.’ Just a month ago in Lagos, Nigeria, a crash involving a C10 Corvette, Jeep Trackhawk, and Dodge Challenger resulted in about $240,000 (400 million naira) in damages. In a video report, The Corvette was totalled, while the other two cars sustained significant damage but could be salvaged.
Fast forward to Morocco, where a recent crash has eclipsed that incident in cost. Two Bugattis—a Chiron Super Sport priced at $3,825,000 and a Chiron Pur Sport at $4,999,990—were involved in a collision during a Grand Tour. The total value of these vehicles is approximately $8,824,990, or about 145 billion naira. Judging by the numbers, the Lagos crash becomes mere child’s play!
What exactly happened?
The crash occurred on October 21, 2024, at the Morocco grand tour rally organised by bugatti. While overtaking a luxury bus, the Chiron Super Sport attempted to pass both the lead Chiron and a truck. Unfortunately, it was in the blind spot of the lead car. Both drivers mistakenly thought they were clear and collided.
The two vehicles crashed into each other while motoring along a two-lane road and a video of the incident can be found here. In the video, the two Bugatti’s are seen making their way around what appears to be a luxury bus at high speed. After overtaking the luxury bus, they are met with yet another obstacle slowing down traffic, this time being a truck.
Instead of passing in order, the second Chiron (Chiron Super Sport) decides to pull out into the passing lane to overtake both the lead Chiron (Chiron Pur Sport) and the truck ahead. Unknown to the second Bugatti driver, he was in the blind spot of the lead Bugatti. The lead Bugatti driver, thinking he was in the clear, also pulled out into the passing lane and collided with the other Chiron trying to overtake everyone.
The Chiron Super Sport lost control and crashed into the truck, skidding off the road. The lead Chiron sustained only minor damage. The Super Sport was left badly damaged and undrivable.
This incident highlights the importance of checking mirrors before overtaking. Interestingly, blind spot monitors, common in most cars, are not features on Bugatti Chirons—likely due to the emphasis on weight and performance.
So, there you have it. A split-second decision led to the most expensive crash of the year so far. With the year not yet over, we can only wonder what else the automotive world has in store.
