GAC has confirmed the arrival of its flagship plug-in hybrid MPV, the M8 PHEV, in the South African market by the last quarter of 2025. The launch marks a strategic step in the automaker’s expansion plan, positioning the M8 PHEV as a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and Toyota Alphard in the premium family transport segment.
The M8 PHEV’s performance credentials put it firmly in premium territory. Its 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine works in tandem with an electric motor to produce a combined 274 kW and 630 Nm of torque. A 25.57 kWh battery supports up to 120 km of all-electric driving—ideal for short daily commutes—while a full tank and charged battery extend total driving range to more than 1,000 km. Charging is practical too: AC full charge takes 3.5 hours, while DC fast charging can top the battery in just 30 minutes. In early markets like Malaysia, pricing starts at RM333,000 (around $75,000 / ₦112 million), though final figures for South Africa remain unannounced.

Visually, the M8 PHEV wears GAC’s “awakening lion” motif. The bold front grille and sharp body lines lend it a commanding presence. Inside, the design philosophy leans heavily into luxury and flexibility. Semi-aniline Nappa leather seats, a 10-point massage system, ventilated captain chairs with extendable ottomans, and a starlight panoramic roof all aim to deliver an executive lounge experience.
The second-row seats can recline up to 75 degrees and slide 480 mm, allowing configurations that prioritise passenger comfort or cargo. With 14 cup holders, hidden storage spaces, and dual entertainment screens, the cabin balances indulgence with family practicality. Even the climate control uses GAC’s “Cool-Sense” draft-free system for cleaner, quieter air circulation.
GAC has equipped the M8 PHEV with an array of safety and assistance systems. Built on the GPMA platform for structural strength, it comes with L2-level ADAS, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, and automatic parking. The MPV introduces an industry-first rear windscreen airbag, part of its 360-degree airbag suite. Electromagnetic damping suspension and adaptive vehicle dynamic control keep ride quality smooth and stable, even at highway speeds. Noise insulation is extensive, with more than 100 components designed to suppress road and engine noise.

The South African launch is part of a phased rollout across global markets. The M8 PHEV first appeared in Thailand in August 2025, becoming the country’s first luxury hybrid MPV. Malaysia opened bookings in May 2025 with strong uptake, while the Philippines previewed the model at the Manila International Auto Show in April before receiving regulatory approval in May. The staggered approach allows GAC to fine-tune its sales pitch to different regions—executive luxury in Africa, practicality for family buyers in Asia.
The M8 PHEV enters a competitive field dominated by models like the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, Toyota Alphard, and Lexus LM. At the same time, it faces new competition from Chinese rivals such as Geely’s Zeekr 009 and BYD’s Denza D9. What makes the GAC M8 stand out is its ability to deliver a comparable luxury and technology package at a potentially more accessible price point, making it an attractive alternative to established European and Japanese brands.
South Africa represents a key test market for luxury hybrids in Africa. By launching the M8 PHEV here, GAC is betting on a growing segment of buyers who want premium comfort with a green edge. The local rollout underscores GAC’s ambition to position itself as a global luxury brand, not just a regional player.
The GAC M8 PHEV’s arrival is more than just a new car launch; it signals a shift in the luxury MPV market. Combining long-range plug-in hybrid technology with executive-class interiors, the model caters to families and professionals alike. The question is whether South African buyers—long accustomed to European luxury vehicles—will make the leap to a Chinese premium MPV. If adoption mirrors its early success in Asia, GAC could establish a new benchmark for family mobility.
