At the mention of Xiaomi, one would expect to see a mobile phone, laptop or maybe even a television set, but certainly not a record-breaking sports car. However, Xiaomi not only has a fully functioning electric vehicle (EV), but also a record-breaking one. Since the advent of EVs, smaller and new car companies have had the opportunity to compete on the same stage with veteran car companies. This has brought about a saturation in the EV market, but this is a story for another day.
More Than Just a Telecommunications Company
Xiaomi’s debut vehicle is none other than the SU7, an all-electric sedan that was launched in 2024. The SU7 comes in 6 different colour options that look just as good as they sound: Meteor Blue, Radiant Purple, Basalt Gray, Lava Orange, Pearl White and Diamond Black. Aside from the visual aesthetics of the SU7, the vehicle’s performance is also worth writing about. The SU7 accelerates from 0-100km/h (0-62.1mph) in 5.3 seconds which is pretty standard for a sports car.

More interesting is that the base SU7 has gotten a more powerful ‘Ultra’ replacement. The SU7 Ultra goes from 0-100km/h (0-62.1mph) in just 1.98seconds, which is supercar territory. It achieves such supercar numbers with its tri-motor powertrain that produces about 1,548 horsepower. EVs are usually quick in acceleration, but lack high top speed numbers. In contrast, the SU7 Ultra has a top speed of 217 mph.. Additionally, Xiaomi also plans to add more powerful optional packages for the SU7. These include a ‘Racing Package’ and ‘Nürburgring Nordschleife Limited Edition.’ Both updates will include a cooling system that will enable the cars to be suitable for track use. With the new cooling system, the SU7 should be able to run two hot laps on ‘The Green Hell.’
Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra Breaking Records
Now to the part we have all been waiting for, the SU7 Ultra currently holds the lap record for the fastest four-door vehicle at the Nürburgring, stealing the title from the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. Aside from the records being broken at the Green Hell, the Xiaomi SU7 is also breaking records in China. The Xiaomi SU7 is the fastest production car at the Shanghai International Circuit. It also holds the record for the fastest four-door, mass-produced car at Chengdu Tianfu International Circuit, Zhuzhou International Circuit, and Zhuhai International Circuit, according to Xiaomi. With the introduction of its new track focused packages, the SU7 Ultra may break even more records.
Ultimately, the SU7 has proven so far to be a force to reckon with in the automotive space. With all of these records being broken, it’s no wonder the company says drivers will be required to pass a test before they can buy the vehicle. Personally, I am not a fan of EVs, but the SU7 Ultra has definitely tickled my fancy. I can’t wait to see what other records it breaks. What are your thoughts on Xiaomi’s record breaking Sports Car?
