A CNG explosion at Mando Motor Park in Kaduna destroyed three luxury buses belonging to Silver Luxury Transport Company early Sunday morning. The incident happened around 3:00 a.m. while the buses were parked ahead of interstate trips. Authorities confirmed the blast came from a gas-powered vehicle and resulted from a mechanical failure, not a bomb. No one was injured, but the fire spread to nearby buses. The incident has brought fresh attention to CNG safety, especially with regard to how the systems are handled and maintained.
CNG Explosion Details and Safety Concerns
The explosion started in one parked bus powered by compressed natural gas. Sources at the park say the vehicles were newly acquired and empty at the time, which helped prevent casualties. The fire from the blast damaged at least two other buses parked close by.
The Kaduna State Police Command said the explosion was caused by an overfilled gas tank. Officials ruled out any form of attack and described it as a mechanical issue linked to the vehicle’s gas system. The affected bus was evacuated, the area secured and normal activity resumed shortly after.
Police have opened a full investigation to understand what went wrong and to reduce the chances of another CNG explosion. The bomb disposal unit was also sent to the scene as a precaution. The incident raises worries again about the practical concerns around CNG safety in Nigeria. While CNG vehicles are gaining attention for lower fuel costs, safe use depends on proper installation, correct filling procedures and regular system checks. Without these, the risk of failure increases. Transport operators and regulators now face pressure to ensure that CNG safety standards are clear and enforced as adoption grows.
