You are sitting in traffic on Eko Bridge when your mechanic calls. He has inspected your recently purchased tokunbo SUV and delivered the verdict: the belt is cracked and needs immediate replacement.
The question you must ask next will determine whether you spend a few thousand naira or rebuild an entire engine. Which belt?
In Nigeria, mechanics often use the term ‘fan belt’ as a catch-all for any rubber loop under the bonnet. But timing belts and engine drive belts are completely different components doing entirely different jobs. Mixing them up is one of the most common and expensive errors car owners make. A cracked fan belt can leave you stranded. A snapped timing belt can leave you with no engine at all.
Two Completely Different Belts
The easiest way to understand the difference between these belts is their location and design.
The engine drive belt (also called the serpentine, accessory or fan belt) powers your car’s peripheral systems. It sits on the outside of the engine, clearly visible when you open the bonnet. It features grooves running along its length and weaves around various pulleys to drive the alternator, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump and often the water pump.
The timing belt does a far more critical job, and it operates in hiding. It sits deep inside the engine behind a protective metal or plastic timing cover. Its job is to keep the crankshaft and camshaft in perfect sync so the engine valves open and close at precisely the right millisecond. Instead of long grooves, it has horizontal teeth that grip the engine’s gears.
What ‘Cracked’ Actually Means
When a mechanic says your belt is cracked, they are almost always looking at the visible serpentine belt.
On older neoprene drive belts, the traditional rule was to replace them if you counted more than three cracks in an eight-centimetre section. However, modern drive belts are usually made of EPDM rubber. They do not crack easily; instead, they wear down slowly, losing rubber much like a tyre loses tread. A mechanic should gauge the rib depth to see if the belt has flattened out. Worse signs include missing chunks of rubber, frayed edges or a shiny, glazed appearance.
Timing belts, however, hide their damage beautifully. Because they wrap tightly around idler pulleys, cracks usually form on the smooth back side of the belt, entirely out of view. Many failed timing belts look almost brand new right up until the moment they snap.
Because visual checks are so unreliable for internal components, manufacturers do not rely on standard inspection guidelines for timing belts. They mandate replacement based strictly on mileage and age.
Why Nigerian Roads Kill Belts Faster
Rubber hardens, loses flexibility and eventually snaps. Heat and constant flexing are the primary ageing mechanisms, and Nigeria provides an abundance of both.
While a typical European manual might suggest a timing belt can last up to 160,000 kilometres, local conditions change the math. Under-bonnet temperatures in Lagos or Abuja traffic can easily hit 105°C to 125°C near the exhaust. Prolonged heat above 85°C drastically hardens rubber.
Beyond the intense climate, our daily driving habits contribute to early failure. Hours spent idling in heavy traffic means the engine and belts are cooking, but the odometer is not moving. When you factor in Harmattan dust—which acts like sandpaper inside belt ribs—and the unknown service history of most imported tokunbo cars, treating an undocumented timing belt as overdue is the only logical approach.
Recognising the Symptoms
A failing drive belt will announce its departure. You will likely hear a sharp squeal or chirp on cold starts, especially when the air conditioning kicks in. The battery warning light might illuminate on your dashboard, your hydraulic steering could suddenly go stiff, or the engine might overheat if the belt slips off the water pump.
A failing timing belt is far more insidious. You might experience a rough idle, hard starting, or a check-engine light throwing cam and crank correlation codes. Sometimes, you might hear a faint ticking or slapping sound from the front of the engine.
More often than not, it gives absolutely no warning. The engine simply dies while driving and will not restart. Because the symptoms of timing failure are easily missed, waiting for a warning sign is a gamble you will eventually lose.
The Cost of Ignoring the Problem
If your drive belt snaps on the highway, you will lose your alternator, cooling system and power steering. It is highly inconvenient, but a tow truck and a relatively inexpensive replacement part will get you back on the road.
If a timing belt snaps on an ‘interference’ engine, the consequences are catastrophic. The engine’s pistons will smash into the open valves at thousands of revolutions per minute. This bends the valves, shatters the pistons and frequently ruins the cylinder head.
Replacing a timing belt is cheap insurance against financial ruin. While timing belt replacement costs move with foreign exchange rates, as of mid-to-late 2026, you should expect to spend roughly ₦35,000 to ₦90,000 for a kit and labour on standard sedans. Luxury vehicles can push past ₦200,000. Compare that to an engine rebuild, which easily runs into millions of naira.
Does Your Car Even Have One?
Not every car uses a rubber timing belt. Many modern vehicles use a heavy-duty metal timing chain designed to last the life of the engine.
If you drive a Toyota Corolla built after 1998, or a four-cylinder Toyota Camry from the 2002 to 2011 ‘Big Daddy’ or ‘Spider’ eras, you have a timing chain. Most modern Honda Civics and four-cylinder Accords also use chains.
However, if you drive a Honda V6 (like the Accord, Pilot or Ridgeline) or an older Toyota V6 (like pre-2007 Camrys, Highlanders and Siennas), your engine still relies on a scheduled, high-stakes rubber timing belt.
Remember, even if your engine uses a timing chain internally, your car still has an external rubber drive belt powering the accessories.
The Nigerian Maintenance Checklist
You can save yourself from roadside disaster by integrating a regular maintenance checklist into your servicing habits.
First, identify what is under your bonnet. Ask your mechanic whether your specific engine code uses a timing belt or a chain. If you bought a tokunbo car with a timing belt and zero paperwork to prove it was changed, budget to replace it immediately.
Check your visible drive belt during every 5,000-kilometre oil service. If you spot an engine oil or coolant leak, fix it early; fluids soften rubber and cause belts to snap prematurely.
Finally, never perform half a job. When changing a timing belt, always replace the tensioner pulleys, idlers and the water pump at the same time. A brand-new belt running on a worn-out, seized tensioner will snap just as quickly as the old one. Avoid suspiciously cheap, unbranded belts from the open market, as counterfeit rubber is guaranteed to fail when you need it most.
